How To Update An Older Pop-Up Camper
Don't overlook an old camper just because the interior isn't exactly up to par. You can make-over that camper and give it an updated look without breaking your budget. Make sure the "bones" of the camper are in good shape, i.e. the floor doesn't have soft spots, the roof doesn't leak, and there aren't any tears in the vinyl. You'd hate to do all of the make-over work, only to find there are leaks that can ruin all of your hard work. Once you've done a complete check-up on the camper, you can get started. See below for helpful tips to take your camper from eh to ooh.
Lay New Flooring
When campers come off of the line, those vinyl floors look great, but with use and over time, the vinyl can tear, stain and look pretty worn out. You can remove the old vinyl, or if the vinyl is in pretty good shape (level), you can lay new flooring over the top. Look for peel and stick laminate planks. You can find a number of different laminate styles to match with your own personal style. Laminate can mimic wood, tile or even stone flooring. Measure your camper floor, then purchase enough to cover the floor, plus some extra pieces to make up for any cuts you need to make to get around the cabinets. Look at your local flooring store in the clearance sections for a deal on this type of flooring. You may be able to find boxes at a big discounted rate.
Paint Cabinets
The cabinets may be in great shape, but those brass colored handles and oak-look laminate cabinets may not really be the look you want in your camper. You can paint over those cabinets, but you have to be sure to do it properly, or the paint will just peel right off. Be sure to clean your cabinets thoroughly using a deep cleaner such as TSP, then rinse them with soapy water. Tape off any areas you don't want to get paint on, such as that new flooring you just laid. Use a primer on the cabinets before painting, as you need something for the paint to adhere to. Look for a primer made specifically for painting your cabinets. Then paint your cabinets any color you prefer and add new hardware.
Cover Cushions
If you're handy with a sewing machine, you can cover those old, ugly cushions with any fabric of your choice. If you aren't handy with a sewing machine, you can call a seamstress for help, but it may be costly to pay someone. Add some fluffy pillows, blankets and maybe a mattress cover to make those beds a little softer, and to make the camper feel more comfortable.
Don't over-look an older camper just because the interior is not your style. You can update it all by yourself, just make sure the camper itself is in good shape before starting, take your time, and enjoy making memories with your family.
